The Mask We Must Wear

We are all shapeshifters
Twisting and turning our emotions

Don't feel, don't show
These are what we learned
All on societal terms

What do we get in return?

Each tear reduced to the excuse of the wind
Every cry for help silenced by your own hand

Being human has become a hazard
The simple task too hard to complete

Poet reflection: This poem hits a soft spot in me, and that's how I meant for it to go for those who read it. Observing people and experiencing interactions with many, I believe the one thing everyone has in common is the mask we wear to hide the true version of ourselves, out of fear and judgment. Our masks were made to protect ourselves from society's opinion and personal projections, but now they have become cages of our own making. Being who you are should never feel like a burden because we are all different and special, but we all bleed, bruise, and feel. This is everyone's first time at life, so why try to be someone else's idea of perfect? Learn who you are. Be the person you are now, and you might find who you were always meant to be!
